Participant review: i4 Neuroleader Certification

By Langley Group | 9 May 2015

i4-certification-1505-880x587.jpgi4 Neuroleader Certification is a course that equips coaches, consultants and leaders with the tools to discover the core 'brain and body' abilities that impact leadership effectiveness, productivity, wellbeing and engagement. Developed by About My Brain Institute, the i4 Neuroleader methodology and tool offers a brain-based approach to assessing and developing leadership capability, integrating the latest scientific research with the needs of leaders and organisations facing increasingly complex, interconnected workplaces.

We interviewed Dr Denise Quinlan, positive psychology practitioner and coach, about her experiences on the recent i4 Neuroleader Certification in Melbourne, led by Silvia Damiano and Sue Langley.

What were your experiences of the i4 Neuroleader Certification?

Training to use the i4 Neuroleader 360 assessment tool was hugely enjoyable because of the competencies it focuses on, the fact that it is a genuine full 360 (including family and friends) and that it was also a 2-day intensive immersion in the latest neuroscience research.

Developer Silvia Damiano was in a unique position to create this tool with several decades of neuroscience study and management experience. The i4 Neuroleader brings assessment into the 21st century with a holistic and future-focused approach that builds on what we’re learning from neuroscience.

As a researcher, positive psychology practitioner and consultant in individual and organisational wellbeing, how important do you feel is this tool to management today?

We know that people who are able to maintain positive emotional states can more effectively perform tasks such as creative problem-solving, inspiring their teams and collaborating. It’s great to use a leadership and assessment tool that acknowledges the importance of affective states in management.

The four key pillars of assessment correspond to the areas of performance, collaboration, innovation and agility. In a rapidly changing workplace success often depends on being flexible, able to bring out the best in colleagues, and responding in innovative ways to challenges. The i4 assessment is about supporting personal effectiveness across these competencies.

How are the learnings gained from the i4 Neuroleader assessment supported and embedded?

After debriefing on the tool the workbook provides practical strategies for developing each of the areas assessed. These are easy to use, practical and effective and mean that the benefit of the assessment extends way beyond the debrief.

How will you use the i4 methodology and tool in your work?

My work is centred on supporting and enabling wellbeing and achievement. A key issue for many leaders and their staff is the challenge of finding balance in their work lives and of integrating their work and home ‘selves’. The i4 Neuroleader enables people to see how they are operating across the domains of their life. It opens up conversations about values, and where strengths are being used and where someone is bringing their ‘best self’ or not.
