In April, Sue Langley and The Langley Group team were invited by the Happiness and Its Causes team to participate in a special event: An Afternoon with Martin Seligman. The event started with a keynote presentation by Dr Seligman, followed by an interview and Q&A session, hosted by Sue.
In the fourth video of our series covering the interview with Sue Langley, Dr Martin Seligman shares his candid thoughts and knowledge around Positive Psychology and Wellbeing.
Can You Have Both Love And Respect?
That was going to be my question... Can you have both? (Love and respect)
So one of the projects that Angela Duckworth and I are doing now is to try to…
How many of you have read Dale Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people?”
Many years ago….
So (it is) the best seller of all time after the Bible and the Little red book. ...We read it a couple of times. This is a book about, in this case, 'how to sell', with tips like - "the most important word in the English language for you is Sue" language. It’s got all sorts of hints like that, so the question is "what are the skills of being liked and loved particularly for those of us (for whom it) doesn’t come naturally"? And then "what are the skills of being respected"? So Angela’s trying to develop a playbook for school children on genuine popularity.
...and Dale Carnegie was the start…For those of you interested there is another book that has just come out called “Treating People Well” by the two social secretaries, Obama’s Social Secretary and George W Bush’s social secretary. So it’s about what you do at the White House to make people feel they’re the smartest person you have ever met.
